New York City’s new budget leaves more questions than answers

Many of the hotly debated cuts, including to libraries, the Department of Cultural Affairs, and the City University of New York system, would have been spread over multiple future years—meaning city leaders may need to relitigate them all over again during next year’s budget, noted Ana Champeny, vice president for research at the independent Citizens Budget Commission.

Council enacts $107B budget despite progressive outcry over cuts

Mayor Adams’ administration has said the cutbacks were necessary given the city’s financial constraints, and the council’s leaders did not dispute that basic premise. Some observers, including the Citizens Budget Commission, said the budget should have done more to trim programs with little impact and stash away money for the city’s reserves. (The budget will maintain reserves of about $8 billion, similar to current levels.)
