Marissa Shorenstein Nominated to be Next Chair of the Citizens Budget Commission

Headshot of Marissa ShorensteinToday, the Citizens Budget Commission (CBC) Executive Committee announced it has nominated Marissa Shorenstein to succeed Walter Harris as Chair of CBC. Shorenstein would become Chair when approved by the CBC Board upon completion of Harris’ term at the end of 2022.

“We are delighted to announce the nomination of Marissa Shorenstein to lead our Board of Trustees beginning in January,” said current CBC Chair Walter Harris. “Marissa has been an invaluable member of our Executive Committee for the past seven years and has consistently been a strong voice supporting CBC’s fact-based research and practical recommendations, especially during the challenges of the recent recession and pandemic. We are incredibly thankful for her steadfast support of CBC’s values and look forward to her leadership to advance our mission in the years ahead.”

About Marissa Shorenstein

Marissa Shorenstein currently serves as a Vice Chair of CBC and has extensive expertise shaping external and public affairs campaigns to address complex policy and reputational issues. She has been a member of CBC’s Executive Committee for seven years and a Trustee since 2012.

Shorenstein is a principal at SKDK, where she advises global clients on strategic and crisis communications issues as well as legislative and regulatory oversight challenges. She recently served as Director of the Executive Transition for New York State’s first female Governor, Kathy Hochul. Shorenstein served as President, Northern Region at AT&T for more than eight years where she oversaw the company’s external affairs for seventeen states and Washington, DC. Prior to AT&T, Shorenstein founded and ran a communications consultancy firm offering strategic communications consulting services to a wide range of private sector and nonprofit organizations. She previously served as Director of Communications for Andrew Cuomo’s successful 2010 campaign for Governor of New York State, and served as Press Secretary and Deputy Director of Communications for Governor David A. Paterson. From 2004–2007, Shorenstein served as Senior Manager for Strategic Planning and Corporate Communications for the New York Jets.

Shorenstein also serves on the Executive Committee of Girls Who Code (after completing her term as their Board Chair) and is a member of the Board of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC). Shorenstein is a graduate of Harvard University and earned a JD from Fordham University School of Law.
